METLIFE INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT BECOMES SIGNATORY TO THE PRINCIPLES FOR RESPONSIBLE INVESTMENT

MetLife Investment Management (MIM), MetLife, Inc.’s (NYSE: MET) institutional asset management business, today announced that it has become a signatory to the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI). The PRI is a global framework that outlines key considerations in the investment decision-making process, with a specific focus on environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors.

As a long-term investor, MIM has always incorporated ESG factors into the investment decision-making process. In 2015, MIM implemented a formal ESG policy in recognition of the growing importance among MetLife’s shareholders, stakeholders and institutional asset management clients. Logan Circle Partners, which was acquired by MIM in 2017, also became a signatory to the PRI in 2014.

Nancy Mueller Handal, senior managing director and head of Private Fixed Income & Alternatives and Sustainable Investment Strategies at MIM, noted: “We have always taken a thoughtful and considered approach when making investment decisions. Understanding how environmental, social and governance factors impact our investments has long formed a fundamental part of our underwriting process, so we’re pleased to have added to our existing approach a robust set of principles such as the PRI.”

MIM joins a global network of PRI signatories who have each agreed to incorporate six core principles:

  • We will incorporate ESG issues into investment analysis and decision-making processes;
  • We will be active owners and incorporate ESG issues into our ownership policies and practices;
  • We will seek appropriate disclosure on ESG issues by the entities in which we invest;
  • We will promote acceptance and implementation of the Principles within the investment industry;
  • We will work together to enhance our effectiveness in implementing the Principles;
  • We will each report on our activities and progress towards implementing the Principles.
