Commercial real estate remained a strong performer in 2016, and we expect much of the same as we look forward into the year ahead. The U.S. economy is on firm footing, with the prospect of fiscal stimulus and regulatory reform likely to improve economic conditions still further. Conditions abroad remain less encouraging with political and economic uncertainty on the rise, making exposure to U.S. commercial real estate an even more attractive prospect. While supply growth continues to build, solid demand has left vacancy levels stable in most property types and rents continue to rise, trends we expect to continue in 2017. Commercial mortgage lenders remain highly active despite their disciplined approach, and property values appear likely to receive considerable support from the capital markets even as interest rates edge higher.
