Portfolio Manager and Head of Chicago Regional Office - Real Estate

Matthew W. Sharples is portfolio manager and head of the Chicago regional office. Sharples assumed his current responsibilities in 2014 and is responsible for the region’s mortgage portfolio and equity portfolio. He joined MetLife in 1998 and served for three years in the region’s loan surveillance unit before transitioning to debt production to originate commercial mortgages in the Midwest. In 2007, Sharples was named debt team leader for the Chicago regional office. Under his direction, his team originated approximately $4.5 billion of whole loans and subordinate debt in the Midwest and Canada.

Prior to joining MetLife, Sharples held roles of increasing responsibility at the General Services Administration, including portfolio manager for six million square feet of government-owned and leased real estate in Illinois, and team leader of the FBI/US Customs Service lease acquisition and tenant representation team.

Sharples graduated with honors from the University of Chicago with a Bachelor of Arts in sociology. He is a Chartered Realty Investor Associate and is an active member of Urban Land Institute’s Chicago Product Council. Sharples has been a member of the Mortgage Bankers Association, and the International Council of Shopping Centers.
