Relative Value & Tactical Asset Allocation – Q2 2026

The K-Shaped Economy Weighs on the U.S. Consumer

Key Takeaways

  • The ISM Manufacturing Index has expanded for the last three months.
  • The Industrial Production Index reached 102.55, a level last seen before the pandemic in September 2019.
  • Capital goods spending has improved since the second half of 2025.

The manufacturing industry has been struggling since the pandemic. Various metrics, including industrial production and the ISM Manufacturing index, have been in contraction or decline for years. First, the industry grappled with supply chain disruptions, labor shortages and strong inflation. More recently, it has been dealing with tariffs and geopolitical disruptions. Despite that, it seems that there is now a real acceleration in the manufacturing sector. After years of contraction, the ISM Manufacturing Index reached a level not seen since 2022; industrial production has reached pre-pandemic levels; and firms’ investment has been growing rapidly.
